The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas -- Movie Review

Antisemitism, propaganda, and hate speech come to mind during the World War II era of Nazi occupied Germany.  When learning about this time in World History I've always wanted to know why?  Why were people so quick to use the Jewish people as scapegoats and why didn't anyone object to this.  But in the movie "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas" you see a different side to those living in Nazi occupied Germany.

This weekend we met some friends to watch a movie.  I wasn't quite sure what to think of the movie choice.  Our friend Jackie suggested the movie and gave somewhat of a brief description of the movie.  A young boy befriends another young boy in an interment camp in Nazi occupied World War II era.

As I watched this movie, part of me though about the United States today.  After the events of September 11th, some people in the US turned to fear and hate.  My fellow country men became confused terrorists for anyone of middle eastern decent."Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it," is what Jackie reminded us during the post-movie discussion. As a country, have we forgotten about the Holocaust?

The director did a tremendous job of capturing the fear and hate of that era in Germany.  It becomes apparent that people were either bullied into following the Nazis or even brainwashed to a degree. You could see the young boy Bruno, his mother, and his grandmother didn't understand why they had to hate Jewish people.
The film is very shocking to say the least and you can see how easy it is to propagate so much hate against an individual or a group of people.  I hope you will consider watching this movie.  Let us not let the past be forgotten.
